The Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander and Tacoma earn their reputation honestly. What kills high-mileage Toyotas is almost never the engineering, it is skipped basics: oil stretched past its life, coolant run to acid, transmission fluid left until it smells burnt.

A few model-specific notes from the real world. The 3.5 V6 in Camrys and Highlanders had an early rubber oil line that was recalled, and its water pump likes to seep around 100k. Hybrids wear brakes strangely: regeneration means pads last forever and then calipers seize from disuse, so the hardware needs service even when the pads measure fine. Older Tacomas and Tundras had frame rust campaigns, less of a California problem but worth a look on any out-of-state truck.

What we watch on Toyotas

  • Oil on schedule, not by the maintenance light alone
  • Water pump seep on 3.5 V6 cars near 100k
  • Brake caliper service on hybrids even with thick pads
  • Transmission fluid age (the "lifetime fill" is a marketing term)
  • Suspension bushings and struts past 120k
