The 5.7 Hemi is a strong engine with one famous weakness: lifters and cam lobes. The "Hemi tick" argument online is endless, but in the bay the rule is simple. A new light tick gets diagnosed now, because a lifter caught early is a repair and a lifter ignored is a camshaft. Ram exhaust manifold bolts also snap with heat cycles, which is why a ticking on cold start that fades when warm is usually bolts, not lifters.
The trucks themselves are comfortable and the ZF-based 8-speed is genuinely good when its fluid gets changed. Air-suspension 1500s ride beautifully and deserve a compressor and strut check at every service once they pass 80k.
What we watch on Rams
- New ticks on the 5.7 Hemi diagnosed immediately, not monitored
- Broken exhaust manifold bolts (cold-start tick that fades warm)
- Air suspension compressor and strut health past 80k
- 8-speed transmission fluid service despite the lifetime label
- Front-end wear on trucks that work
