The R56-generation Mini, roughly 2007-2013, is the one with the famous homework. The N14 and N18 turbo engines built carbon on their intake valves, leaked from valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, ran through water pumps and thermostat housings, and above all developed the timing chain rattle every Mini tech can hum from memory. A cold-start "death rattle" is a same-week appointment, not a quirk.
The later F56 cars with BMW B-series engines are substantially more robust. All of them are genuinely fun, and they stay fun when the known items are watched instead of discovered.
